Earlier this year, we welcomed an overseas client to China. He wasn't just a business partner - he was a friend who had traveled across the world to visit our China dental lab in person.
Most of our work happens across screens and time zones: scan files, emails, a design confirmed over video call. It's easy to forget there's a real person behind every file. So when our client came to visit, we wanted the trip to be about more than business - about people, cities, and a good meal together.
The Trip Started in Shanghai
As the sun went down, the Bund lit up on one side of the river, and the Pudong skyline rose on the other. Dinner that night was as much a visual experience as a meal - a whole crab served in its shell, fresh uni laid out on ice, thin slices of fish arranged like cranes in flight. The dishes gave us plenty to talk about at the table, and the conversation drifted naturally to the cities we each call home and the small surprises of each other's countries.
Afterward, we walked along the Bund together, talking about nothing in particular, and stopped for a photo in front of the skyline to remember the evening by. It's a small thing, walking beside the river with someone you've mostly known through emails - but it's often these unplanned moments that turn a working relationship into something closer to a friendship.
From Shanghai to Shenzhen
From Shanghai, we traveled together to Shenzhen, where our lab is based. Here, we got back to business - sitting down with our client to go through the questions and needs that had come up during his visit. The time we'd spent together in Shanghai made this part easier too; we understood each other well enough to work through the details and land on solutions, and by the end, we'd agreed to work together for the long term.
Our client left China happy with the trip. But just as meaningful as the agreement itself was what came with it: a real connection built across culture and distance.
